More of Typhoon Ondoy's Wrath (Photo Set)

I visited a relative's house this afternoon in Masambong, Quezon City to bring some food. Their family is a victim of the typhoon Ondoy. Their 2-storey house's first floor was submerged in water last Sept. 26.

Although it was raining since the night before, water did not rise significantly until 9 in the morning since they are on an elevated area in their community. They begun to be alarmed when water started to reach their gate and eventually their apartment unit.

They began moving some appliances to the second floor with priority on the electronics. But the increase in water level was very sudden that it reached knee level by 3pm INSIDE their house!. It's good that there were two men in the household.
They can't do anything about their car parked in the garage but watch it slowly go under the flood.
The rain was not stopping and the water reached it's peak by 10pm almost reaching the first floor's ceiling. The rest of the story will be told through the pictures they managed to take and share:
Thank God, it did not reach second floor where they were already planning to move to the neighbor's rooftop just in case. They were able to bring up some emergency food as well.

The water has subsided the next day but left a total mess of the house. Cabinets and some electronics like stereos and cellphones they were not able to bring up were destroyed. Some wallet, watches, and jewelries were gone with the flood.
They have been cleaning the house of mud and dirt since Sunday and our other relatives bring them food food daily as well since their stove and kitchen appliances were rendered useless. The repair is another headache.

It would certainly take a while before everything goes back to normal and the destroyed appliances replaced.

AOC Launches the Green Monitor AOC 36 Series

The first monitor I bought with my own money back in college was an AOC monitor. I hand-picked the brand to be part of a PC package. I have handed it down to a relative and until now, it's still working fine!

Ten years later, Admiral Overseas Corporation (AOC) once again launches a special LCD monitor series that endorses green technology through power-saving features - the AOC 36 series.
Biggest screen AOC 2436VW can save the owner up to 50% of the energy used - hence they also call it the Green Monitor. It is a wall mountable 24" LCD Widescreen HD Monitor. It has both analog D-sub and DVI-D inputs. It claims to have a super-fast response time as well.

PRODUCT DETAILS
• 23.6” Widescreen
• 1920 x 1080 maximum resolution
• Response Time: 5ms (GTG)
• High Brightness 300cd/m²
• Dynamic Contrast Ratio 60000:1
• Analogue and Digital inputs
• Shell Texture

Ula Landrillo, Product Manager of Glee Electronics

"When switched to Power Saving mode, the monitor only uses 50% of the power, this without affecting image quality and saving up to 104,000W per year. Up to 75% of the energy used in a typical LCD monitor can be saved while using the 936Sw compared to CRT monitors. Meanwhile, AOC’s market leading i-Bright technology reduces backlight CCFL for lower power consumption and less mercury substance"
It also has a USB port (sounds like Mac) and touch keys on the right hand side of the panel(not as touch screen though). I am excited to try a product test of my first monitor love. :)
Other models of the AOC Green monitor 36 series are 936Sw and 2236Vw, at 19" and 22" screen sizes, respectively.

Whiteout, Wiped Out

Get positively wiped out watching Whiteout (or White Out for SEO purposes) :) - an action-thriller suspense movie situated in Antartica.

Aside from a shooting spree at the very start, the film developed albeit slowly giving the viewers enough tour of the majestic ice land in the southern part of our globe. It also established major characters of the film especially Kate Bekinsale who starred as US Marshall Carrie Stetko.

The most isolated landmass on Earth
90° S. latitude, zero E. longitude
Six million square miles of ice
Six months of darkness
Temperatures at minus-120 degrees
Winds at 100 miles per hour
It all begun when Stetko and Dr. John Fury (Tom Skerritt) found a deadman on ice to which the cause of death posed a lot of question. It was also Antartica's first homicide.

And in the quest to answer this question, they found unexpected answers which led to more mystery, discoveries and eventually, betrayal.

All this amidst, Stetko's haunting past and a seemingly developing relationship with Gabriel Macht (Robert Pryce).
White

It was a refreshing action-thriller movie set in Antartica. Something different for a change. It also tried to show how it is to live life surrounded by ice as paralleled to US Marchall Stetko's personal sentiments.

Black

I believe the Kate Beckinsale hot shower scene (and the moments before it) was a good 5 minutes for the male audience, but I think was not necessary for the movie nor the story. It was an obvious attempt to leverage on Kate Bekinsale's physical attributes to boost ticket sales.

Equals...

Based from a book, I believe nonetheless that Whiteout was able to maintain a fairly good balance of story, thrill, and action all throughout the movie.

I give Whiteout 3.5 out of 5 stars and recommend you to watch it for the above-mentioned reasons. Just watch out for some bloody and finger-amputating scenes you might have to bear with (and of course, the bonus shower scene for the guys).
A Dominic Sena film, Whiteout is presented by Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Dark Castle Entertainment.

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III for President

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III announced early this morning his presidential bid for Philippine elections come 2010.

Using the sign "Laban" (fight) which symbolizes his political party's main thrust and the hand-gesture popularized by his late parents Ninoy Aquino and Corazon Aquino, Noynoy Aquino stood tall as he officially declared his candidacy.

A date chosen carefully, 09-09-09 is also the 40th day after Cory Aquino's death.

In his speech, Noynoy acknowledged and accepted the public clamor and challenge raised to him by the people. He is accepting the legacy left to him by his parents and the responsibility to continue their [parents] fight. This was held at around 8am at Club Filipino in Greenhills where Cory Aquino took oath for the highest political position in the land back in 1986.

News Source: http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/nation/view/20090909-224337/Noynoy-Aquino-to-run-for-president-in-2010 Photos from Noynoy.ph and Noynoy Aquino Facebook

It was not confirmed however, if Mar Roxas would be his running mate as vice-president. Rumors are going around that other aspirants are also possible like Jejomar Binay, current Makati City mayor.

Noynoy is expected to be largely supported by those tired of the current government and his sisters especially celebrity Kris Aquino. Questions about Noynoy Aquino's girlfriend is also floating around as a prospective future first lady.

Noynoy
Aquino is also expected to face other possible presidential aspirants including Estrada, Escudero, De Castro, and Villar.

The Globe, A Tatoo, The Youniverse, and A Dare

Not too long ago, Globe Tatoo is equivalent to Globe Broadband branded as 'hip.' Now, Globe Telecoms rebranded it to cover a myriad of services central to the new Globe Tattoo sim.

In a recent bloggers' launch at M Cafe and Handle Bar in Makati, Globe introduced the Globe Tattoo Sims, Youniverse, ImmortalTXT, and Surf All Day services.

Globe Tattoo Sims

It brought the modern, hip, and rebellious designs of the Globe Tatoo broadband to the Globe Tatoo sim cards. It also promised the fusion of 1 SIM for the mobile phone and internet, aside from fututre new services, and access pass to exclusive discounts and invites. All this at P40. Check details here.

ImmortalTxt

The new ImmortalTxt boasts of the 'no expiry' text.

Finally, the major telecoms heeded the 'no expiry' cry of the public. For P10, both postpaid and prepaid sunscribers could have 50 texts to Globe/TM and 10 texts to other networks that never expire*.

You still have to register though, text IMMORTAL10 to 8888. There's a minor catch as well, you'd have to maintain a P1 balance. Chekc details here.

*Subject to SIM validity.
*Promo period from August 30 - October 30, 2009. Per DTI-NCR Permit No. 4462, Series of 2009.

Surf All Day (For Mobile Social Networks)

For P20, one can surf different social networking sites the while day with the Surf All Day plan. Get unlimited access to Friendster, Facebook, Wikipedia, Plurk!, andPing.fm.

Upon going to the following sites:
* Friendster: http://m.friendster.com
* Facebook: http://m.facebook.com
* Plurk: http://m.plurk.com
* Wikipedia: http://en.mobile.wikipedia.org

User will be directed to a page where you will be given the option to choose between the regular browsing rate of P0.15 per kb or P5 for 15 minutes or the Globe Surf All Day Plan. To choose the latter, simply click on the Surf All Day P20 link to register and wait for the SMS confirmation of your subscription. Check details here.

** I wonder why there's no links for Twitter and Multiply though; perhaps in the near future.

Youniverse Mashboard
One could visit the mashboard-looking Globe website at http://tattoo.globe.com.ph/ This is where information about all the abovementuoned services can be found as well. It looks to target netizens and social network addicts over its mashboard interface.

However, as its waiver says, it's still in its alpha version, hence not all features are functioning as I've observed the 'Youniverse' to be rather too slow even for my broadband connection. It surely has a lot of room to improve upon, function-wise.

Above is the TVC of the Globe Youniverse and Immortal TXT campaign recently launched on national television. Good for them, the two naked bodies kissing passed the censorship for public TV broadcast. :)

The Dare

And finally, the 'dare'. Globe organizers dared teh crowd to get a real tatoo on the spot and get a chance to take home an HP Mini laptop.

I surely badly needed one but my kelloid-prone skin certainly can't have one. Anyhow, I'll just get that HP mini through other means besides a Globe Tatoo Youniverse gathering :)
