GSK Offers 30-50% Price Reduction

Early last month, Glaxo-SmithKline (GSK) announced a price reduction on its most major brands. This is to expands Filipino access to its globally-trusted medicines. It has dropped the prices of most of its major medicines by 30 to 50 percent in a bid to make quality medicines affordable.

This is the first time the company embarked in this wide-ranging reduction not only in the country, but in other countries as well.

“GSK recognizes the need to improve patient access to the best quality medicines and have worked to help address this,”
said Roberto Taboada, GSK Philippines president and managing director.

Some of the medicines are for acute diseases including pneumonia, ulcer, bronchitis, hospital acquired infection, nausea and vomiting. Its cervical cancer vaccine continues to be available at a more affordable price, after it was reduced by as much as 60 percent in November 2008.

"...up to 40% of our people live on less than 2 dollars per day and are unable to afford essential drugs and medicines that they need in order to fight disease."
according to Secretary Francisco T. Duque III, MD, MSc. During the Launch of the Corporate Initiatives of Glaxo-SmithKline (GSK)

This is somehow a more expanded ValueHealth program. Value Health was a program initiated in 2004 by GSK, which offered significant price reductions for the company’s most widely prescribed treatments for cough, asthma and bacterial infections.
Other plans of Glaxo-SmithKline (GSK) global chief executive officer Andrew Witty includes drastically reducing prices in the 50 Least Developed Countries such as the Philippines.

Revenge & Betrayal - An X-Men Origins Wolverine Movie Review

The origin of the X-Men saga revolved around Wolverine's story, his supernatural healing powers, and how he acquired his adamantium claws. Hugh Jackman once again reprises the leading role of Wolverine, this time not yet as an X-Men, but as the independent mutant.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine tried to stay true to the general tone of the X-Men comic books but made it as its own by injecting minor twists and turns to make the story more interesting and being successful at that.

Together with brother Victor Creed (Sabretooth), Agent Zero (Daniel Henney), Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds), Bradley (Dominic Monaghan) and other mutants, they formed Team X led by William Stryker (Danny Houston).
Moreover, the story played with the emotions of the different characters from the basic familial instincts between Logan and his brother as played by Liev Schreiber. In more than enough scenes, it showcased how the two complemented and contradicted each other. Needless to say, the fighting scenes were complicated and technically praiseworthy.

The first bite of betrayal came when death met schoolteacher Kayla Silverfox, played by Lynn Collins. She was Wolverine's love interest. The incident begotten revenge that led to the answers of many of Logan's questions.

But the most essential emotional circus is that of his own. Logan, who eventually became Wolverine, was not really resolved as to who he is or who/what he should be. It was an internal battle of his own animal or his human side.

Many a mutants were also introduced from the sidelines such as the eye-blasting Cyclops, Quciksilver, Iceman, and the Gambit (Taylor Kitsch).

There was one technical glitch though towards the end. In a scene where the mutants were running away from the 'island' and was about to load a helicopter, the CGI rendition was a failure. I can't believe it passed through production because for such an untrained eye such as mine, I was able to see it; much more by them.
The movie can be considered a not-too-distant prequel from the past three X-Men movies. It was able to give more justice and somehow explain Wolverine's nature and attitude in the three X-Men movies. On the other hand, the upcoming sequel is something to be looked forward to as how things would further develop and complicate.
Aside from the heart pounding action scenes, the movie is a great watch with visually stunning effects, awesome stunts and interesting story twists. Directed by Gavid Hood and produced by Ralph Winter, it is not only for the comic-book or X-Men fans created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby but for the action-loving genre altogether.

A film brought to you by Twentieth Century Fox, watch X-Men Origins Wolverine in the big screen, opening May 1, 2009 in Philippine Theaters.

Earth Day's The Green Generation

A movement that begun 39 years ago, Earth Day is again commemorated today to promote awareness and remind us to appreciate this place we live in called Earth. It aims to forward campaigns and movements toward preserving what we have left in the environment.

This year, the Earth Day Network also starts The Green Revolution campaign. It is a two-year campaign that proceed until the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day in 2010. The Green Generation is about people, ordinary or otherwise, willing to make a stand for the global issues or even as simple as improving one's own natural environment. It is open to everyone, whatever age or nationality.

Its core principles are:

  • A carbon-free future based on renewable energy that will end our common dependency on fossil fuels, including coal.
  • An individual’s commitment to responsible, sustainable consumption.
  • Creation of a new green economy that lifts people out of poverty by creating millions of quality green jobs and transforms the global education system into a green one.
Read more about it here.

Locally in the Philippines, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is celebrating this year's Earth Day themed as "Sibol: Earth Day 2009: Nurturing a Green Generation" through various activities including tree planting, an edu-tainment show, film showing, and art design competition, among others.

Check the details of the activities here.

Even some private companies gave their share in supporting the environmental campaign through their own promotions like what Starbucks did .

Today is World Autism Day

April 2 is World Autism Awareness Day. And one organization in the Philippines which provides support for families in the provincial areas is Autism Society of the Philippines (ASP).

I only knew about this and their cause through Ria, a friend-blogger who is supporting their advocacy by making it her own as well as part of her simple birthday celebration.

Autism is a developmental disorder that is characterized by speech/communication and social impairments in individuals with the disorder. It is a lifelong disorder that affects not just the individual with autism, but their families as well. Estimates show that approximately 1 in 150 children is diagnosed with autism. Although more prevalent in males than females, autism can affect anyone: it knows no gender, age, no race, nationality, and socioeconomic status.

I realized that as a preschool teacher and a psychologist, this would be something I can actually get involved in and be a part of, and not just in name or by word: but because I can actually DO something ...

If you think this is a worthy cause, please do check her article from which the quotes and images were referenced and possibly support her campaign by ordering limited edition Angel Baller Bands (I have) :) whose proceeds will benefit the chapters of ASP. This would assist the awareness campaign and the children with autism and their families.
