Samsung Supports a Greeener Industry

“As technology continually evolves, so will your digital lifestyle. When you upgrade your consumer electronics, you will need to recycle your old products – responsibly” states Samsung’s Recycling Direct website which promotes end-of-life recycling programs.

Samsung Electronics America, Inc. recently announced in Las Vegas a number of award-winning products and technologies that are designed to contribute to the growth of ‘greener’ consumer electronics and appliances industries. Samsung’s new products include innovations that reduce the impact upon our natural resources, and help consumers lessen their environmental footprint while enjoying the best available digital entertainment and home life experiences. Some of their products were displayed last Jan 8-11 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Energy- Efficient Products

The new 9000, 8000, 7000 and 6000 Series build upon the success of Samsung’s first and second generation LED HDTV models. These cutting-edge TVs use LEDs as their primary light source, rather than traditional Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps (CCFL). The Samsung 6000 Series was also honored with an Eco Design Award in the 2009 CES Innovations Design and Engineering Awards.

The benefits of using LEDs include not only improved picture quality, but also reduced power consumption levels to easily meet the stringent new Energy Star® v3.0 guidelines. The LED modules are mercury-free, which makes for cleaner manufacturing and safer recycling when compared with backlight technologies currently available. In the LED HDTV line, energy consumption is reduced by 40 percent versus traditional LCD HDTVs of a similar size. The LED HDTVs also include a power indicator menu, and an optimized energy savings mode. In addition, these TVs require less material to manufacture and are thinner, reducing packing material and consumer waste. The smaller packaging allows for more units to be shipped and less fuel to be consumed at a time which potentially reduces Samsung’s carbon footprint.

As the trend towards delivering sleeker and thinner electronics products for consumers continues, Samsung has re-designed its Plasma HDTVs to use less material and less energy.

Convenient and Responsible Recycling

Samsung’s dedication to designing energy-efficient and environmentally safe products is complemented by the Company’s commitment to providing convenient and responsible recycling options for its consumers. Samsung Recycling Direct, launched on October 1, 2008, provides more than 170 fixed drop-off locations across the country, as well as recycling events, for consumers to bring their old electronics for recycling.

Samsung Recycling Direct will accept, for no fee, all Samsung-branded consumer electronics sold in the United States ranging from televisions, DVD and VHS players, audio equipment and home theater systems, to mobile phones, cameras, camcorders, computer monitors, printers, and peripherals. Non-Samsung-branded consumer electronics in the same categories will also be accepted through SAMSUNG RECYCLING DIRECT for a nominal fee paid directly to the recycler upon delivery of the e-waste. In addition, a growing number of fixed drop-off locations will be made available for Samsung-branded home appliances.

For a complete list of drop-off locations, and to learn more about Samsung’s respected recycling partners and standards, please visit: www.samsung.com/recyclingdirect.

About Samsung Recycling Directsm

Samsung Recycling Direct is Samsung Electronics America, Inc.'s new, convenient and comprehensive commitment to the recycling of consumer electronics throughout the United States. Samsung Recycling Direct is available in all 50 states and it enables consumers to recycle Samsung-branded and non-Samsung-branded consumer electronics sold in the United States, with the exception of home appliances. However, there will be a growing number of drop-off locations that will also accept home appliances. A Digital Book Geek Contest - Be the Book Geek of the Month

I got a comment/message from my old blog itsComplicated.i.ph yesterday inviting me to join and help spread the word about Fully Booked's Book Geek of the month.

It's about a contest to be held this coming 4pm of January 22,2009. The first 25 Bloggers Book Club (BBC) members who can submit their complete entries with all the correct answers shall be qualified as contestants to the competition on the 31st of the same month at their Bonifacio High Street branch. The winner will be eligible for the finals come November and earn the glory to be called the "Fully Booked Ultimate Book Geek".

I was a little surprised at first as I thought that the request to spread the word about this event is counter-intuitive since I would statistically have more chance of being part of the first 25 submittions if there were less competition. So the fewer members who know about this means lesser competition and more chances of winning! Muwahahaha. =)

But that's just the devil on my left talking. =)

I decided to follow my guardian angel on the right and heeded the request of a Fully Booked fellow and probably another Blogger Book Club member as well.

So, Fully Booked Bloggers Book Club members, what are you waiting for?! Ready yourselves and join the fun next Thursday 4pm. If, for any reason you decide not to do so, don't worry, we wouldn't mind as much either. =)

Samsung's “Seamless Experience” at CES 2009

The next evolution of the seamless user experience – one of greater interactivity, more intuitive user interfaces, and fresh eco-friendly technology – debuted last week January 7, 2009 in Las Vegas at the 2009 International CES as Samsung Electronics unveils an exciting array of new products and features at the company’s annual press conference.

This year’s offerings earned Samsung an unprecedented 46 CES Innovations Awards, reinforcing the company’s leadership position in visual display, digital music players and home theater systems, while highlighting Samsung’s growing commitment to environmentally-aware product development.

LED – Backlight in the Spotlight

Samsung introduced a new line up of LED TVs under the family of HDTVs for 2009 ranging from 40-55 inches that achieve previously un-reachable mega-contrast ratios.

All of Samsung’s LED TVs contribute to the company’s eco-friendly vision, consums 40 percent less power than standard CCFL-backlit LCD TVs, far below the stringent Energy Star version 3.0 requirements.
The TVs use low electricity and contain no mercury, while the neck and stand are made of eco-friendly materials. Included in this new line is the B6000, which is the slimmest of any LED TV on the market with tuner inside and features the world’s slimmest wall mount solution that reduces the gap between the TV and the wall to 0.6 inches.

“This new lineup of LED TVs represents the next chapter in Samsung’s global television leadership,” said Tim Baxter, EVP for Sales and Marketing - CED, Samsung North America.

Of Clocks and Buttons - A Review of the Movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Do you remember as a child wearing you parents clothing mimicking to be a grown up? Or wanting to be an adult as soon as possible during your teens so you could be independent and do anything you want? But now that you’re older, you somehow want to go back in time even just a few years, if only possible; or at least look like one with some medical help. Well, Benjamin's case is a little more complicated than that.

Of Clocks

Based on a 1920s story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is not your ordinary story. Neither is its main character Benjamin Button, played by Brad Pitt. He was born in his 80's. Yes, he looks just like your great grandfather with all the wrinkles and dry skin, but only as a baby. Getting younger at the age of six, he stands just as tall but still with white hair, arthritic knees and some cataract.

He was able to cope with his unusual condition early on with the guidance and love of the people around him specially his mother, Queenie.

Of Unbuttoned Buttons

The story unfolds with his growing up years, the first girl who caught his eyes, and other interesting people he met including his father who abandoned him. It is at this part where the story might have dragged a little. But it was something you wouldn't mind as you anticipate how young Benjamin would look like in the next scene.

After going through a number of adventures and a world war, Benjamin is now at his prime, no white hairs, and barely a wrinkle. The film even gave glimpses of Brad rolling a big man's bike and another by the yacht in the middle of the sea at mid day. Although I think they were not necessary for the movie, I believe the Pitt fans enjoyed them.

Of Realizations

He eventually found his true love back in the girl who first caught his eyes and now a woman named Daisy, played by Cate Blanchett. They were both very much in love and they enjoyed life. The uniqueness of their condition caught upon them when they were graced with a baby girl. Benjamin further realized that a father who gets younger in years as his child grows older would not be a situation he wants for his family. He left.

Tension arose as hopeful spirits wanting to hold on contradicts with the outcry for normality. The movie explored the importance of seizing opportunities, the essence of parting with loved ones, and the value of time - both in the normal and the backward sense.

Of Seeing

The movie is has 5 Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture and Best Director. It won as One of the Top Ten Films of the Year from the National Board of Review. Other casts include Taraji P. Henson, Julia Ormond, Jason Flemyng and Tilda Swinton. The film was directed by David Fincher from a screenplay by Eric Roth and presented by Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures.

Watch Benjamin Button to realize that life is worth living, to appreciate the age you're in, and be struck by lightning 7 times.
